Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Project applications close 15 May 2019.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Did you know our playground is open in the holidays?

We are excited to participate in the Share Our Space program when it returns these autumn school holidays. Participating public schools across regional and metro areas of the state will continue to open their playgrounds, ovals and sports courts for the whole community to enjoy.

You and your children can play in public schools all over NSW. Schools from Lord Howe Island Central School 600km off the east coast of mainland Australia all the way to Palinyewah Public School in the far west will share their outdoor facilities as part of the program.

Participating schools are open 7 days a week between 8am-6pm from 13 to 26 April 2019, including weekends and public holidays.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Premier highlights the value of public education

Kiama and Parramatta public schools hosted the launch of Education Week today.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, with (from left): Education Minister Rob Stokes; State Member for Parramatta, Geoff Lee; Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott; student performers and comperes, and the Principal of Parramatta Public School, Gail Charlier (far right).

Public education can be the springboard to the top job in New South Wales.

That was the message from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, as she launched Education Week celebrations today at Parramatta and Kiama public schools.

"I know that all schools across the state today are highlighting and celebrating what we all value in public education – where someone like me who couldn't speak a word of English when she started school has somehow ended up being the Premier of NSW," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she had met many possible future leaders during her visit to Parramatta Public School and "couldn't be prouder, as your Premier, to witness the outstanding achievements of all the students across the state".

The dual school launch, linked via a live simulcast, focused on the theme of Education Week, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, which highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the launch was hosted entirely by primary school students and featured student performances from Eastwood Public School violinist Justine Zhang, Bossley Park High School soloist Ezra Loau and dancers from Hoxton Park Public School.

Year 8 students from Kiama High School – Alira Morgan, Jannali Morgan and Olivia Talbott – opened the celebration with an Acknowledgement of Country performed in language.

Keynote speeches were delivered from Kiama by Terara Public School Year 6 student Lucy Boundy, Molly Chapman, a Year 8 student at Dapto High School, and Nowra East Public School instructional leader Vishanti Govender.

Lucy told the launch that education was about opportunity: "Opportunity to learn, opportunity to improve and opportunity to make a difference."

In detailing her early struggles with learning, Molly said a more hands-on approach to study at her high school had a huge impact on her.

"I learn more effectively by seeing and doing things because it gets in my head more easily and pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks to school, I'm exceeding in almost everything I touch," she said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes highlighted the "incredible legacy" of public schools on society, a role contemporary education and educators would play in the future.

"We are in a period of vast technological, social and economic change, and with that the role of education becomes more important, even bigger, and the challenge for teachers and students becomes more complex," he said.

"We need to provide training in those skills that recognise the future is uncertain and to train and encourage young people not just to be ready for the change that is coming but to be excited by it."

The future of education will be showcased in NSW public schools from August 6 – 10 as students, teachers and parents across the state celebrate Education Week 2018.

Education Week kicks off on Monday, August 6, with a simultaneous launch at Parramatta and Kiama public schools livestreamed on YouTube so all government schools and their communities can join in.

This year's theme, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the Education Week launch will be hosted by primary school students and will feature a dancing robot, student performances and a film highlighting how schools are working with their communities to solve real-world problems.

A highlight of the week is the Game Changer Challenge, in which 16 teams of students from schools across NSW will compete in a three-day design program, working alongside leading industry professionals to create the school of the future.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today's students were learning at a time of great change.

"From the far west to our metropolitan hubs and everywhere in between, our state's schools will celebrate not only what we've achieved, but the future we are creating," Ms Berejiklian said.

"We are living in a time when the traditional walls of the classroom are opening up to new worlds of learning, paving the way for students to connect and collaborate with their peers regionally and globally."

Education Minister Rob Stokes said there had never been a more exciting time to be involved in schools with technology reshaping the way students learn and billions of dollars being invested in new school infrastructure.

"The NSW Department of Education is continually striving for improvement and innovation so that the young people in our care learn in a world-class education system," Mr Stokes said.

"The NSW Government is supporting that vision through a record $6 billion in funding to build the classrooms and schools of the future."

The Secretary of the Department of Education Mark Scott said ensuring today's students had the skills they would need to "not just survive, but thrive" in the future underpinned the department's evidence-based approach to learning.

"I am incredibly proud of the innovative teaching and learning that is being done across our State's public schools to ensure that every student can perform to their full potential," Mr Scott said.

"We don't know what the future will hold, but we do know that we are focused on equipping today's students with the skills and knowledge they will need to lead fulfilling lives in the future."

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

A new uniform policy has been introduced for NSW public schools, which for the first time include the option for girls to wear shorts and pants.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

Term 1 complete!

We've had a fantastically fun term at The Pocket Public School

A few highlights…

P & C

We held our election for our new P & C executive which saw the biggest turn out of parents we have had in recent years. The new P & C have split up our fundraisers for the entire year and designated working parties to each one! Go the P & C, we love your support!

Creative Arts Groups

This year we are trialling creative arts groups as we look to use the expertise of all our staff to improve student learning outcomes. This term K/1 were lucky enough to participate in Drama with Mr White, 2/3 completed a dance unit with Amorette and Davina while 4/5/6 learnt many new songs with Mrs Perin!

Music and Choir

Janet continued to run our music program each Wednesday. The band focused on percussion while each class had their 45 minute lesson. They learnt about composers and had a focus on learning music with "birds" in lyrics. The final assembly of the year was dedicated to MUSIC. It was a huge success with the choir, the band and each class performing an items.

Library

Our library lessons were a hit with Mrs Perin. Mrs Perin saw each class in the library for 45 minutes per week. They learnt about quality literature and growth mindset.

K-6 Buddies

We continued to build strong links with our children across the grades. Our 4/5/6 class completed problem based lessons with the K/1 class each fortnight. They also helped them in the play ground through games and general guidance.

Sport

We were incredibly successful at our VoSS swimming carnival this year as we won the carnival with the most points. Our individual swimmers made it as far as regionals!

We had several children selected in the North Coast Tennis Trials and sent many of our senior children off to soccer trials at Bangalow.

Year 6-7 Transition

Our year 6 children began their high school transition process at Mullumbimby, Byron Bay and Mt Saint Patricks.

School Plan and Teacher's Learning

For those parents that I am able to trap, they would know my love of talking everything education. This includes the school plan that is now published on our website. We are making outstanding progress in meeting our improvement measures outlined in this collaboratively composed document.

Our teachers continued to learn! We had teachers attending unit planning with our Valley of Small Schools, learning about Language, Literacy and Learning, going to 7 Steps course and completing in school learning. We are a busy bunch!

Parent Teacher Interviews.

We held our parents teachers interviews in the last three weeks of term where our parents were able to book a time to learn all about their child's progress at school.

Our last week of term was HUGE. We were lucky enough to take the entire school to The Commonwealth Games where we watched athletics at Carrara Stadium.

Our K-2 children went to Durrumbul to participate in History In The Valley. An excursion where teachers led learning workshops about what life used to be like. The children rotated through Aboriginal dreamtime sessions, barn dancing, art, old play ground games and singing.

The 3-6 students participated in a debate to finish their History unit. The debated with Main Arm Public School the fact that Ned Kelly was a villain!

There was lots of learning going on in the last week!

Tennis Night / Harmony Day Celebration

Where: The Pocket School of course!

Bring: This year we are running our tennis night as our Harmony Day Celebration. Bring a multicultural dish to share. Place your plate on the shared table and enjoy all the other dishes! Make sure you have catered for as many people that are coming in your party. Also bring a tennis racket or borrow one of the schools.

Activities: We have the kids well and truly engaged for the evening, this gives you the opportunity to mingle and relax with the other parents and community members.

5:00 - 5:30 The children can play on the equipment, join a sport activity or complete an art session.

5:30 - 6:00 Shared Meal Time. We will also be treated to a song by our amazing choir and band.

6:00 - 6:30 Another great sport and activity for our children.

6:30 - 7:00 We will finish with a DISCO run by Mrs Hauenstein!

Who can come? We would love to see families from The Pocket School, friends and members of our great community. If you know someone that would like to come and have a fun and relaxing evening, bring them along.

We have had an exceptional start to 2018!

Welcome

It gives me great pleasure to welcome all of our new families and children to the wonderful learning environment at The Pocket School. We have a range of new families joining us and some returning from extended holidays.

A huge welcome to Mr White, our new 4/5/6 teacher, and Kez who replaced Lockie in our student wellbeing area.

What has been happening so far?

Kindergarten 2018

Our new kindergarten children started off the year by completing their Best Start Assessment. They continued to cement their friendships with their older buddies through playing together in the playground and completing lessons together in the classroom.

Swimming

In week 2 we competed in the VoSS swimming carnival. Our children had a great day at Mullumbimby Pool and were incredibly successful, winning three out of four age champions and being crowned carnival champions! Go The Pocket. Following the district carnival we have two children representing our school at zone swimming. Best of luck Teo and Erin.

We held our delicious morning BBQ in week 3. This saw almost all of our families attending to have a great feast in the morning and then being part of the first assembly of the year. Thanks to the Baker family for the amazing mangoes too!

Student Representative Council

Week 4 was the first SRC "collection". This is where our student leaders from year 6 set up stalls in the COLA to collect ideas for their portfolios from the other children. We are looking forward to hearing these ideas at the first full SRC meeting in week 5.

P & C

We had a great turn out to our first P & C meeting and AGM. A huge thanks to our outgoing executive and welcome to our new committee.

What a year!

We ended 2017 with a bang!

In the last three weeks of school we:

Completed swim scheme, held our awards night, presented "Happy Days" – our school play, had fun on a water slide, had a blast on the year 6 mystery tour, welcomes Mr Wallace – our new 4/5/6 teacher, raised money for the P & C with Walking With the Stars, watched our end of year slide show and said goodbye to our year 6 children!

With a list this long you can only imagine the fun we got up to throughout the whole year!

Story Board

On Tuesday 17 October we welcome Samantha Turnbull to The Pocket School to run two slam poetry workshops. Samantha is the author of the Anti-Princess series and a slam poet!

Mindfulness

We welcome Bobbi and Shakti back to The Pocket to lead lessons around positivity within our mindfulness program.

Smart Start

Our 2018 kindergarten transition continues. All the dates are available on the Kindergarten Transition tab above.

As we come into the end of the term we will be heading off to our intensive swim school and preparing for our amazing end of year concert. Make sure you have the date in your diary - Thursday 7 December.

An End to a Magnificent Term 3!

School Camp

This term school camp ended our amazing term 3. We decided to have a a camp out school that involved an amazing disco lead by Mrs Hauenstein, a great movie, problem solving and group work activities. Some of feedback from the kids was that we should do this every year and not go away for camp!

Art Attack

We welcomed Roley Pearce to The Pocket to run our Valley of Small School Art attck Program. This saw Main Arm and Durrumbul Public Schools come down to learn all about pastels and how to incorporate them into their art works.

Book Parade

We held the incredible Pocket School Book Parade in week 7. This saw our parents, children and teachers all come dressed as their favourite book character. We had Fantastic Mr Fox to Mindstorm characters.

Smart Start Program

Our Kindergarten Transition program kicked off this term. We had three half day transitions with our 2018 kindergarten children meeting and working with their new buddies and their teachers. We were also inundated with applications for children and families wishing to enrol at The Pocket for 2018. All out of zone applications are now full.

Term 3 Is Underway

Another action packed term is over half way through!

Interest Groups

Our interest groups have seen more engaging lessons based around drama, cooking and Indonesian culture. Make sure you ask your kids about these lessons!

Dolphin Dreaming

The whole school headed to Byron Bay to participate in a program called Dolphin Dreaming. This action packed excursion teaches children about Aboriginal culture with a focus on the local Arakwal people. Our children played collaborative games, learnt new aspects of Arakwal language and participated in cultural activities.

Deadly Dancers

This term we had a visit from the Deadly Dancers. This dance troupe is made up of school children from local primary and high schools with an Aboriginal background. The kids get together to rehearse at Mullumbimby High School and then travel around the local area spreading their strong cultural connections. We love having the Deadly Dancers at The Pocket!

Mindfulness Demonstration Lessons

We invited Bobbi and Shakti from Mindfulness in Education into see our progress in rolling out mindfulness across the school. We were focusing on the power of positivity!

Life Education

In Week 5 Life Education visited the school and ran personal development lessons with each class.

Term 2

As we wrap up Term 2 2017 we look back at a term full of enjoyment and learning.

Robotics

We received the 15 Lego Mindstorm Robots for the second 5 weeks of this term. The students worked collaboratively to design build and problem solve. It was great to see the Year 5 and 6 children taking the lead role and teaching our K – 4 children.

Skateboarding

We starting our annual skateboarding lessons. The children had a ball putting their growth mindsets to work while trying to conquer new and challenging tricks.

Sport

Our Year 5 and 6 children were incvolved in two great gala days. They split into four teams and headed to Mullumbimby to play in a netball gala day and then they competed in a soccer gala day the following week.

The teams performed well in both gala days, picking up several wins and learning new skills along the way.

Athletics Carnival

Always a highlight on The Pocket calendar, our Athletics Carnival did not disappoint this term. We travelled across to our sports field (Davina's paddock) and competed in 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500m running events. We also held a fantastic pre-schoolers race! Following the track events we returned to school to complete the long jump, discuss and shot put field events. Congratulations to all the children who competed with respect throughout the entire carnival.

We also had many winners at the VoSS Athletics carnival. Congratulations!

Winter Festival

In our second year of the Winter Festival we had high hopes of making the festival even better then last year. I may be biased but we definitely achieved an incredible day. We had close to 1000 people come through the front gates and enjoy a relaxed day of music, good food, great coffee, exciting kids activities and engaging cooking demos. A hue thank you to the school P & C for working tirelessly to get this great event to the standard it was this year. I can't wait for 2018!

The Mid Way Point - Term 2

Another incredible term is passing by far too quickly. A lot has been going on here at The Pocket...

Robotics

The robots have arrived! We have 15 Lego EV3 Mindstorm kits for the next five weeks. 2/3/4 and 5/6 started building as soon as they arrived. Within just one hour they were able to build and program a Genbot!

Ruby and Erin Run Cross Country

A huge effort from Ruby and Erin who attended the cross country at North Byron Parklands on Friday. Erin finished with an outstanding fourth place and heads off to Murwillumbah to represent The Pocket School! Not to mention her only being 8 years old!

Sport at The Pocket

After our community forums in 2015 the community indicated a need to be more involved in team sports. We are definitely delivering! Over the next three weeks Kel and Milo, our NRL development officers, are running training sessions with all of our classes, we have our entire 5/6 class heading to Mullumbimby for a Netball Gala day tomorrow, next week our 5/6 soccer team is off to Rosebank for a gala day and last term we secured Nash from Byron Bay Basketball for a seven week training program. Just to top it off, we are running our athletics training sessions twice a week and we start our skateboarding program on Friday 9 June!

Buddies Program

Our K/1 class continues to build connections with our 5/6 buddies. Each fortnight the classes learn through problem based STEM activities. It's pretty impressive! Thanks to Mrs Perin and Davina for running such an outstanding program.

Teachers are Learning Too

This week all of our teachers head to a VoSS learning session regarding feedback linked with our Learning Intentions and Success Criteria. This directly related to our Visible Learning implementation goals. If you want to know more be sure to speak to your classroom teacher.

Last week Davina headed off to more L3 training. Constanly learning new activities to continue the amazing reading and writing results in our younger years.

Mrs Hauentstein spent a day at Ballina Public School learning all about different learners, including children with autism.

In the coming weeks Mrs Perin is learning all about Project Based Learning.

Mr Glasson was at a network meeting last week, learning about new policies, canteen procedures and learning and support teams.

All teachers had demonstration lessons with Bobbi nad Shakti last week as we continue to improve our mindfulness practice.

Pauline is learning all about a new computer system – LMBR (SAP / SALM). It's the biggest change across the Department of Education since the 1990s. You may see some new faces in the office this term while Pauline heads off to the LMBR training sessions.

Amorette heads to Lismore next week to learn from Autism specialist, Sue Larkey!

As you can see, we are always learning!

Learning Dispositions

Each fortnight we have a whole school learning session around our learner dispositions. This term we are focussing on resilience and the learning pit. Keep an eye on flexibuzz to find out more!

The Pocket School Winter Festival

Saturday 24 June – 10am – 2pm. This is our schools big fundraiser! Last year's money that was raised from this event went towards employing Janet, our music teacher, purchasing laptops and robotics for our kids. Be sure to tell everyone you know! We are straight back into it at The Pocket School!

ANZAC Service

The Pocket School was out in force on Tuesday morning with many families and children turning up at Brunswick Heads at 4:45am to commemorate ANZAC Day. We had children from kindergarten through to year 6! A huge thank you to our student leadership team for your presence and paying your respects at the cenotaph.

It was great to see / hear Dr Dunstan play the Last Post. We also caught up with Dr Hissink who attended our school ceremony last year.

On Thursday we held our school service run by our amazing year 6 leaders. It was a pleasure to have many returned service men attend our ceremony and talk to our children about their journeys.

Cross Country

Our Cross Country was on Friday of the first week back. What a huge success! Congratulations to all of our students for attending and being party of a healthy lifestyle.

Fairy Trail

As many of you may know, Chaska and Styler have taken it upon themselves to improve our playground with our very own Fairy Trail. Chaska purchased Three pre made houses for the trail after convincing the student parliament to donate $250 toward this improvement area. They arrived in week 1 and are now being set in the playground. They plan to make the rest out of recycled and natural materials! Not bad for a student in year 1!

Humble Pies

A huge thank you must go to a local business, Humble Pies. They very kindly collect all of their tips and donations following the floods that swept through our region. They raised over $400 for our great school. Thank you!

Movie Night

Our school movie night will be held on Friday 5 May. A great excuse for the community to get together, have some dinner and watch a nice family movie. It starts at 5:00pm so come on down and join the fun!

Winter Festival

Planning for our winter festival is in full swing! The date is Saturday 24 June.

Kindy Transition for 2018

We are now taking enrolments for our 2018 Kindergarten class. We have our parent info session on Wednesday 24 May at 9:30 - 11:00. See you there!

Gardening and Art Club

This term Cheryl and Katrina will continue to run our ever popular lunch time art club. We are also adding a gardening club to the mix. Amorette will be donning the gloves and engaging the kids at lunchtime with some fun activities in the garden.

Interest groups

We started interest groups with a bang this term, K/1 definitely did as they took on the role of an inflating balloon in drama class! Mrs Hauenstein took the 5/6 class to the markets in Indonesia with her incredible lesson on negotiating the right price and Davina cooked up a storm with 2/3/4 as they baked delicious ANZAC cookies.

What a term we have had! New children, new families, new laptops, robotics kits, morning BBQ's, captain ceremonies, assemblies, working bees, family tennis and basketball night, basketball coaching, mindfulness, learning intentions, success criteria, swimming carnivals, ice skating, student led projects, music, band, recorders, library, science and of course floods! As you can see, our amazing children have access to the best of the best!

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to a few people. Over the past week we have been working hard to make sure our children have a safe school to return to.

The staff at The Pocket School have worked tirelessly to get the school back up and running, forgetting their usual job descriptions to disinfect the flood affected kids equipment, clear flood debris, pull up carpet, answer phones, gurney, cut logs, log damage…the list is endless. As a parent, and as the principal, I would like us all to acknowledge the effort our staff put in to making sure our kids have the best environment possible, ensuring our students feel safe and comfortable to learn. It does not go unnoticed.

To the parents, thank you. Thank you for instantly asking if we needed any support to get our school back up and running. Thank you for the amazing donations that are coming in – this is unexpected and incredibly generous. Thank you to the Mehlson family for the donation of the sign surf board to auction off at the Winter Festival. Thank you to Humble Pies, most notably Cassandra and Kristy, for setting up a donation box. Once again, unexpected and incredibly appreciated. Thank you for lending a hand to others within our community as well. Thank you to Gordon from Light House Removals for collecting flood affected furniture from around our local community. I am sure there are many other people to thank out there.

Tennis At The Pocket

Following the success of our community tennis night last year, we have decided to host another one!

When: Friday 3 March

Time: 4:30pm - 7:00pm

Where: The Pocket School and The Pocket Tennis Court

What: Adult tennis matches will rotate on the court. Children can enjoy the school grounds, join the art club or get involved with the sporting activities in the COLA.

Bring: Tennis racket, water and Pat Cash head band.

Food: Bring any BBQ food you would like. The BBQs will be set up so you can use them when you would like to cook dinner for yourself and your family.

Welcome to another exciting year of learning!

We have so many great initiatives tacking hold this year.

- We continue our focus on visible learning. This means whole class and individual goal setting with a focus on writing.

- We have purchased 15 Legoo Mindstorm robots to increase our children's learning across coding, programming, collaboration, problem solving and creativity.

- We continue to build the leadership capacity of our amazing children through explicit teaching, mentoring and real world situations.

- We will be cementing our Learning Dispositions - Imaginative / Wonder, Resilient, Thinking Critically and Collaborating.

- Our continued focus on building our gardens and creating a sustainable wild life corridor for our native bees and other insects will again feature heavily in all aspects of learning.

- We continue to run our school band and choir program. Each child also has a 45 minutes music leasson each week with Janet, our music teacher.

Year 6 Mystery Tour

On Monday Year 6 went off to Lake Ainsworth and had a ball completing a two hour session with Rubber Soul Boarding Co. The group raced Stand Up Paddle Boards, learnt about water safety and completed team building activities. After all of that hard work we had to get ice cream!

Year 6 High School Transition

On Tuesday many of our Year 6 children went over to Mullumbimby High School for their last transition of the year.

Walking With The Stars - Australian themed

This is our yearly fun run. The children, parents and teachers all looked amazing. The water station was by far the most popular point on the course. Talent On Show

Talent was on show at the 2016 The Pocket's Got Talent! On Friday, 19 acts from K-6 performed to a packed house at The Pocket School. We were treated to gymnastics displays, dancing, singing, keyboards, drumming and African drumming. The comperes even added some comedy into their introductions to keep the audience engaged! At the P & C meeting we spoke about the work our teachers have been doing with the Valley of Small Schools network. This has largely been focused on setting writing goals through defining exemplars against the writing continuum (If you are not sure what this means, speak to your child's teacher).

Within our classrooms we have been setting learning goals with our students and teaching towards them. This enables our kids to know what they are learning and how they are going to learn it.

Here are some of the goals that we are making visible for our kids through our data and 'bump it up walls'.

At The Pocket Public School we are composing our own learning dispositions, qualities that an outstanding learner will need in our modern world. Our amazing children are currently drafting them before they are taken to the student parliament, the P & C and to the teachers. We can't wait to roll these out across our school in Term 4. Magic Fills The Pocket this week as we welcome over 70 preschool students to our amazing school. The young boys and girls will be learning about everything magical! We have a magic performance by The Pocket School students and a professional magic show from Oska The Magician. Added to that we will have four magical rotations run by our incredible teachers; The Magic of Making, The Magic of Play, The Magic of Imagination and The Magic of Science. It's going to be a fantastic day so if you know any preschool aged children that would like to come along, register by calling the front office. Small School, Big Impact!

Another exciting term at The Pocket is in full swing…

Music

Music has started with a bang! After the huge success of the Winter Festival we have been able to employ Janet, our music teacher! She has been running the school band, classroom lessons and helping Ms Perin out with the choir! Small School, Big Impact!

Mindfulness

We continue to implement mindfulness throughout our school. In week two we welcomed Bobbi and Shakti back to work with our students and developed their sense of self.

Plant a Tree Day – Friday 29 July

Ms Perin worked in conjunction with Byron Shire Council to secure a plant donation from Wilsons Creek Nursery. The whole school planted out next to the chook pen, behind the outdoor learning space and around the vegie gardens with the plants that were donated. What a great day!

Debating

In week three we welcomed Brunswick heads to debating against our formidable team! What an excellent experience for both schools. The rebuttals were fierce and the team work was at another level! Congratulations to Brunswick Heads who took the win for the day.

Writer's Festival

Last week our 5/6 class went to the Byron's Writers Festival to further engage with outstanding children's authors and illustrators following the success of our Tristan Bancks visit. Out children delighted in seeing Kate Forsyth, Tony Flowers and Nick Faulks.

Skate Boarding

Last term a young chap in our 5/6 class came to see me regarding one of his passions, skate boarding. He wanted to know if we could teach it here at The Pocket. I said that we couldn't but if he wanted to further research it he may find an organisation that could run it for us. So off he went… a stream of emails later to Flavio from Byron Bay Skate Boarding and the dates were booked. I had a permission note written, the companies insurance details, Working With Children Checks and contact details for other schools that Flavio had taught at. What a learning experience and great to see the drive from Lior to support an active lifestyle for our whole school!

Flavio taught his first lesson last week, what a ball we had. All of the kids were engaged and learning so much about skate boarding and benefits to their health. To top it off, it was soooo much fun!

Our Teachers are Learning

This term our teachers will continue their learning with our Valley of Small School on 7 Steps of Writing and Visible Learning. In line with our school plan we will be looking at the dispositions of a learner and reviewing our assessment strategies.

District Athletics

Filling Up The Pocket

As we finish off the term we realise how much we have achieved this term. We have definitely filled a lot of Pockets!

The Winter Festival

Wow! With close to 1000 people coming through our front gates, The Winter Festival was a huge success. We saw so much support from stall holders, local businesses, the emergency services and of course our large community base.

We are excited to announce that event has raise between $5000 - $6000 (The P & C are still counting). This money will go directly to employing our new music teacher and to purchase two great reading programs to help support the learning of our students.

This event was so successful due to the commitment from the P & C and our great staff at The Pocket School. The P & C worked tirelessly to ensure the day was a success. In fact, they have worked tirelessly all year to raise money for our children. They have two more fundraising events planned for this year. Music Program

As you would be aware we are starting our new music program next term. Our school band will rehearse / jam from 11:00-11:45 on Wednesday. Following this each class will have a full 45 minutes music lesson with our amazing music teacher, Janet Swain. We are incredibly excited to be offering the joy of music to our students.

Fun and Play in the Playground

Following our community forums last year we found that our students wanted more engaging activities within the playground. We are definitely delivering on this! So far this year we have initiated the mud kitchen, lego, the outdoor classroom, music, the fairy garden, art club and two new free performance stages. This week we collected sticks and have been building dens! Next term will see an exciting student lead initiative that two leaders pitched to the staff earlier in the week. Keep an eye out for these new hang out spaces and if you haven't seen the playground in action, pop in and check it out!

Sport

The Pocket School Students have continued to excel in the sporting arena. This term we have been involved in two soccer gala days, a rugby league gala day, tennis coaching every Friday on our tennis court, our incredible School Athletics Carnival and our combined Valley of Small Schools Athletics Carnival! From this carnival we have many students representing at the District Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to Amy who was Age Champion!

Emotional and Social Literacy

We are constantly asked how we cater for student's emotional and social wellbeing. There are a myriad of way we do this at The Pocket School; explicit teaching, peer mentoring, Personal Development Programs, engagement, working collaboratively in small groups etc. Most recently we have purchase Theragames. These games engage students through play based scenarios. The games are lead by wonderful Jono who initiatives outstanding social and emotional skills programs within our great school.

Learning Meetings

With the term coming to a close our teachers have been meeting with parents to celebrate the successes their children have had within their learning and to look at what learning goals they will be moving towards next semester. It is such a great time to reflect on how far our children have come and the learning goals they have met so far this year.

Creative Play

One of the most important activities for children is creative play. Creative play is expressed when children use familiar materials in a new or unusual way, and when children engage in role-playing and imaginative play. Nothing reinforces the creative spirit, identity, learning and social and emotion skills more than providing large blocks of time to engage in spontaneous, self-directed play throughout the day. Play is the serious business of children and the opportunity to play freely is vital to their healthy development. This term we have launched our outdoor kitchen play area and the recycled creative play area. What is our recycled creative play area? – whatever you can imagine it to be. So far it has been a ship, a car, a space ship, a dining room, a cubby house… the list goes on. The best thing is, there is more to come!

Tristan Bancks

What a hit Tristan Bancks has been. Not only is he an incredible author he can also play soccer (just in case your children hadn't told you)! He has inspired our students with his "bending the truth" stories to write and write and write, using some real life facts and building in some fiction. He shared a few of his techniques with our classes throughout the week. Here are a few students putting his techniques into action (collaboration, working outside in nature, using technology and just write!).

Learning in K/1

This was K/1 engaged in a shared reading session. They were talking about gravity! Yep, K/1 were exploring gravity, the two girls were demonstrating how it works. Talk about condensing the curriculum.

A Puppet Show in Science

In the 5/6 class our Science learning for this term has revolved around light. The learning culminated in a shadow puppet show. Talk about making learning fun, engaging and informative for the audience. Check out the end product and a behind the "sheet" shot!

Unique Art Opportunity

In Week 6 we will be launching a unique recycled art opportunity for our creative students. Michelle will be in on Tuesday to explain what it entails – thanks Michelle for your creative ideas, we love having parents involved in the learning process!

Mindfulness Sessions for Parents

With our in-class mindfulness lessons running so well, we are spreading it into our community. In Week 6 we have Bobbi running some parent workshops. Register your attendance through the front office.

Kinder Info Session

We have opened our enrolments for 2017! This week we held our first information session for 2017 parents where we spoke about the amazing learning opportunities our children have, the incredible people they are connected with and the amazing environment where our learning takes place. It's contagious! Today K/1 have been learning about IMAGINATION through reading When Henry Caught Imaginitis. From this great book they have let their imaginations run wild! They were inspired to composed imaginative sentences and stories and are now using the dress up box to continue to let their imaginations run free. I wish I was in K/1! Open Day / Kindergarten 2017 Info Day

Our Open Day is fast approaching – Wednesday 25 May. Check the Kindergarten Transition page for an outline of what the morning will look like.

Learning

As is now tradition at The Pocket, we jumped straight into our social responsibility lessons during the first week of term. The students learnt about resilience, working together and confidence. The feedback we have received from our wonderful students is that these lessons, and the follow up from the teachers, helps them to understand how to work together and makes them feel good about themselves. Our teachers continually comment on how much they enjoy this learning time at the start of each term. Keep an eye out for next terms values.

As I walk around the school I love seeing our students engaged in fun and exciting learning activities. If you have a chance, pop in and take the tour!

New Faces

We have a few new faces around the school this term. We welcomed Jono and Dagmar to the teaching team. These wonderful educators will be working with our students to engage them in their social and emotional learning as well as their academic learning.

The Winter Fair

The P & C are working overtime to get the school fair up and running. We have many different activities organised for the day; Sustainable workshops for our parents and wider community, family yoga, family Zumba, a music stage, face painting, pot decorating, gem discovery, food stalls and market stalls. Music Fills The Pocket

Following our Community Forum last year we received feedback around engaging a music teacher to further strengthen our private tuition lessons and our classroom music programmes. Behind the scenes we are working hard to secure a music teacher to further grow our engagement within this vital learning area. We hope to have this up and running before the end of term 2. ANZAC Ceremony 2016

The Pocket Public School gathered to commemorate ANZAC Day on Tuesday 5 April. We welcomed special guests Mr John Mckay, Mr Anthony McKay, Commander Joel Hissink and Mr Barry Stanford.

Our Year 6 leadership team led the moving ceremony with many community members shedding a tear during the poem recitals and touching messages from Mr J. Mckay and Commander Hissink.

Cross Country 2016

Another great Small Schools Cross Country was held at Newrybar today. The kids we excited and ready to race. We had all of our children running, from Kindergarten to Year 6. The boys and girls had a ball. We had two first place getters and many in the top 8 of each age group. Well done to these students who automatically advance to the district trials. I thought my hat would take the prize on Thursday last week, boy was I wrong. I even sent a picture to Mr O to show him how great my creation was, trying to keep the costume rivalry alive! Harmony Day at The Pocket

Harmony Day is a time to celebrate our different stories, no matter where we have come from. Our school is full of beautiful children, families and staff from many cultural backgrounds. To celebrate this diversity we held a wonderful Harmony Day celebration on Wednesday 16 March. Despite very wet conditions, about 100 family and community gathered to be entertained with a Mexican Hat Dance by 2/3/4, an original song by Ayla, a story written and read by Ruby and also Noah & Dunstan on the didgeridoos. Then there was THE CULTURAL FEAST - delicious! Thank you to everyone who came along (or contributed with amazing food), We continue to inspire our kids to celebrate their uniqueness, dream boldly and celebrate their cultural backgrounds, no matter where they are from.

Debating Hits New Heights

At The Pocket Public School

debating is taught explicitly to our children as it is an integral part of life and it meets many learning objectives from NSW syllabus documents.

Last week we saw the first rotation of our debating groups. 2/3/4 and 5/6 mixed their classes up and ran explicit lessons in the art of debating. We saw many great rebuttals, fantastic persuasive techniques and great leadership skills as our older children worked with children in the younger grades.

Creative and Performing Arts @spaghetticircus

Throughout this term our amazing children will be involved in creative and performing arts at Spaghetti Circus. Last week our Stage 3 students attended the workshops in Mullumbimby. They completed activities on the mini tramp, the silks, used hoola hoops, wobbled on stilts, built human pyramids and bounced on the trampoline.

Not only are our students learning about gymnastic movements when they are at Spaghetti Circus, they're also engaged in valuable aspects of socialising through working with peers from Main Arm Public School and Durrumbul Public School.

The student leadership team were engaged in their first task today.

They had to work out how to run and organise the Mother's Day Stall. They were tasked to order the items to sell, the price per item, the profit to be made and the approximate profit for the whole stall.

Not only does this type of learning link directly back to the Mathematics Curriculum, is also engages the children in real life learning, cooperation and negotiation skills.

The conversations so far have been outstanding. So giving are our students that profit was not a huge priority, instead the discussion was around ensuring that everyone had access to a gift for their mother or a female figure in their life. We are incredibly lucky that these young people will be the adults of the future!

The sounds of keyboards, vocalists and the drums were radiating from the library on Friday. This definitely means that Jo, our amazing music teacher, is back! Welcome back Jo!

Outdoor learning space HERE WE COME!

I am thrilled to announce that The Pocket Public School has just received confirmation that the NSW Government's Environmental Trust will be supporting The Pocket Public School with a substantial grant, which will be utilised to establish an outdoor learning space. Only last week we received our long anticipated native bee hive, which has already been installed in the space we have set aside for the project.

This grant was applied for earlier in the year by Bridie, one of our amazing parents, with a little help from Mrs Hauenstein – Congratulations Bridie! Once completed, outdoor learning experiences will be ever more a part of routine at The Pocket Public School. Mr Glasson is so excited that he has temporarily set up the space with all of the silver seats (pinched from the COLA).

Collectively our strong school community makes so many amazing contributions to this school; from getting involved in the classroom, assisting in the running of events & canteen days, to the writing of grant applications and taking an active role in the Parents and Citizens' Association. Thank you, it all adds up to make a big difference!

Week 7 update

Time for a little update, what an eventful term we have had! Don't stop to catch your breath, the few weeks we have ahead of us are cram packed with goodies!

K/1 are learning all about senses

K/1 have had a number of visitors over the last few weeks – including a visit from an oral health expert and Cheryl Baxter who led an awesome hearing health session in which K/1 checked out a detailed model of the ear (and all its miniscule workings). They learnt all about how to look after their hearing. These visits have lined up beautifully with the senses science unit they have been engaging in.

2 / 3 have been busy

2/3 have just received word from Vanuatu! The goods that we as a community collected as part of Mark Russel's initiative have found their way to Vanuatu. Photos and a map will be uploaded soon which show the villages around Epule, where the container supplies have been distributed.

In the 4/5/6 room

4/5/6 have been working on personal research projects, they are being presented in the administration building, more will go up each day as they are presented to the class. Take a little time to browse next time you're in, you might learn something new!

New arrivals to The Pocket Public School!

Native bees have arrived! Come on in and check out the hive. It is located within the chook enclosure. They are a stingless native bee that will work their magic in our already thriving veggie patch. They're not just sitting out there to pollinate and look pretty in their little white house though, oh no, they are a valuable learning resource! They came with their own learning program that includes units of inquiry across Literacy, Science and Technology, Geography, History and Environmental Studies – how cool is that! That little corner of the school lends itself nicely as an outdoor learning space, this certainly hasn't gone unnoticed! Parents and staff have been working to turn this space into a valuable outdoor learning space for some time now. The new addition to the school's population is a step towards that goal.

How's that for an update! There's still plenty of term 4 left too.

Curriculum and Learning - Innovate Inclusive Practices

Learning, learning and more learning! Celebrate The Success (AKA - What have we achieved this year!)

1) Taking Off With Numeracy (TOWN) - This is an outstanding Mathematics Program that provides ongoing professional learning to teachers over the school year to assist in assessing each student's current numeracy understanding and to monitor student progress. Beyond this, the program provides explicit guidance in designing whole class teaching programs to further develop each student's numeracy understanding.

2) Language, Learning and Literacy (L3) - Another outstanding education program. This one is currently run in our K / 1 classroom. Students receive explicit instruction in reading and writing strategies in small groups of one to three selected students. Students then rotate to independent individual or group tasks. This occurs in the daily Literacy session.

3) National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) - The national data collection on students with disability acknowledges the work already undertaken in our school to support students with disability. It assists us to identify and to support students with disability so they can access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers.

Firstly, I would like to say thank you. Thank you for attending our community forum and giving great feedback to "What does a great school look like?". From reading the "Love Boards" and through the discussions had, it is clear that we are well on the way to having the same vision.

I have been able to have a quick scan of the ideas placed in the boxes and they are fantastic!

Before the end of term 4 we will be finding the trends from the ideas boxes that have been submitted by our community, our students and our teachers. Following this we will action them into our school plan and we will inform everyone involved as to what 2016 and beyond will look like for The Pocket.

So keep an eye on your emails, check our website and read our newsletter. Or you could drop in for a chat (definitely my preferred option).

Walking With the Stars: P&C Rock Stars Fundraiser

Friday was yet another great day for The Pocket Public School. Congratulations to the P & C for an outstanding afternoon of music, fun and STARS! From Amy Winehouse to Gene Simmons, we had them all. Events like this extend the learning experiences that our students are engaged in day by day, and further solidify the strong community we have here at The Pocket Public School. I do hope that everyone involved takes a little time to pat themselves on the back! We are pretty awesome.

As Mr Glasson mentioned in the newsletter this week, his costume was on point; improvised costume, face paint and accessories. I have trained him up well! Everyone put in a solid effort. Students, families and staff went all out! Did you see Mrs H's very literal take on ‘walking with the stars'?

There were some amazing prizes given away - way to go P&C! How good is it to be recognised and supported by our wider community in this way! The categories included most money raised, most laps and random prize draw. We had hot air balloon rides, horse rides, a body board, a skate board, shirts, tennis racquets… the list goes on and on.

Maths Making Morning – We want you!

Why?

Mathematics is an integral part of everyday life. In order for students to achieve their maximum learning potential a teacher needs many ‘tools' in their ‘toolkit'. Maths games and activities are one of the valuable ‘tools'. Normally teachers spend their weekends or exciting Friday nights making these games ready for the following week or future weeks to come, we would love your help!

How?

Teachers are currently compiling many different Maths games for their teaching and learning cycles. These are from Department of Education strategy books and involve a lot of photocopying, cutting and laminating. We want your help to make the games!

What is it?

An opportunity for you to "Help Out" at school and create some Mathematics resources for the classrooms.

When is it?

Wednesday 21 October, 8:30 – 11:30

If you can make it we would love your help. If you can't stay for the entire session, 30 minutes would be great! We can offer delicious coffee, tea, biscuits and cake! Let the office know if you can help.

On Monday of week 9 Lara, Azalea, Morgan and Jarrah visited Fingal PS to compete in the Premier's spelling bee. The competition was as tough as expected! All students put in a champion effort.

Lara will be going on to represent The Pocket public School at the state finals next Term! How cool is that!

Lara was not just competing against other year three students either, oh no. She was up against all of stage two! That's years three and four!

Very few students from The Northern Rivers made it through to the State finals this year. In fact, Lara will be the Byron Shire's one and only representative at the State Finals!

Learning in the Library - Weeks 9 & 10 update

Making Values FUN!

In library this week the K - 3 students have been learning about the values of friendship. Why? Friendship and social responsibility is an important aspect of education and life in general. At The Pocket we understand this and continue to grow the whole child.

How did the lesson look?

We firstly spoke about our friends and some of the outstanding qualities that they display. We made this great mind map.

We then broke into groups and used our communication and collaboration skills to choose a friendship value and create a play-doh movie!

One half of each group modelled the inappropriate behaviour, while the other half exemplified how to use the friendship skill in action.

What was the outcome?

Students could describe a situation where they could use one of the friendship values. They could also identify where a value could be applied. Well done K - 3!

The learning session also incorporated great group work skills instruction, fostered creativity and allowed for peer tutoring via mixed aged grouping.

Students from K right through to 6 are engaging in an Asian themed unit of work across the Key Learning Areas this Term. Here are a few photos of our K/1 students with some of their Southern Asian Countries projects.

2/3 are moving onto a focus on Japanese culture and 4/5/6 are all gold mad As they have been exploring the history of gold mining in Australia from the perspective of Asian / Australian miners.

On top of our classroom learning we have had a very busy two weeks. With book week, the big vegie crunch, bird buddies, planting with Bunnings AND a visit from members of the Billinudgel Rural Fire Brigade. We really have been go go go throughout the last fortnight.

What a day!

The books came alive at our outstanding book parade! It is always a great joy as an avid reader to see students sharing the joy that books can bring to our lives.

Thank you everyone for another champion effort! We need to keep coming up with excuses to gather around a table to have a chat and read some books over tea and nibbles. It's always great to get together to celebrate the learning of our amazing students in conjunction with our community.

We had some extra special guests this year. The Pocket Public School Learning Community would like to thank both the Canowindra Elders' Craft Group and the Coolamon Retirement Village members who joined us to make the day extra grand! We hope you had an awesome day out here with us in our beautiful valley.

The costumes were amazing! I have never seen so many mad hatters, Alices, red or white queens! Not that the costumes stopped there; Darth Vaders, wizards, foxes, and that red and white striped lady who kept on disappearing, and the list goes on! - Champion effort everyone, the books were well and truely alive!

It was great to have so many families along too, and in costume,... with their dancing shoes on! It's always a treat to have so many Pocket Public School Learning Community members getting involved in events and celebrations. Don't be shy; Term 3 is far from over!

And as for the costume show down between Mr Glasson and Mr O'Connell, there was one clear winner. Mr O'Connell took the title, proudly standing aloft the winner's podium surrounded by our students. Maybe next year Mr Glasson, maybe next year!

We will be holding our Mad Hatter's High Tea Day here at TPPS as part of our Book Week celebrations. Word is that Mr Glasson and Mr O'Connell are going to have an epic costume show down. Who will come out on top?

You can dress up as any character from any book! But, Alice in Wonderland is our theme this year. So the more mad hatters, vest wearing time poor rabbits, grinning cats and Jabberwocky slaying Alices the better!

Sizzling Science Day @ TPPS

On Tuesday The Pocket Public School had just shy of 100 guests from four of our local preschools: Billi Lids, Ocean Shores, Lilly Pilly & Little Dolphins. We all got stuck into some awesome science investigations and experiments! It was another great opportunity for our senior students to take on a leadership role. Well done all! Your science show was awesome!

Our K/1/2/3 students had a blast too! They joined in with the Billi Lids group, who they know well from their visits throughout Term 2.

Mullumbimby High School got involved too! Thank you to staff members Andy and Chris and the four student helpers as well. Your expertise and assistance was invaluable. It was awesome to have you here with us for the day.

Thank you to all of the preschoolers, parents and staff who made the day so special for our students, we hope your day was as awesome as ours.

From The Pocket to Vanuatu

The Pocket School's Vanuatu goods drive was wrapped up during week 2.

Thank you to the Pocket Public School community of learners who have supported the initiative, set up by Mark Russell from www.rebuildvanuatu.com. The Pocket Public School raised $382 last term and during week two of Term three the amazing amount of clothing, sporting gear and toys collected were packed up and trucked out.

At the last minute Mark was able to organize Mullumbimby Reliable removals, who donated their time and a truck, what champions! This saved Donna from making many trips by car. Thank you to everyone involved. It is great to be supported by the incredible community we have around us here at The Pocket Public School.

Vanuatu was hit hard by cyclone Pam. The Pocket Public School hopes that the contributions we have made make a difference where needed. It is significant to be aware that even from our quiet little corner of the Byron Shire, we can have a positive impact globally. Thank you again Mark, for inviting us to work with you on this project.

National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week

To kick off Term 3 the Pocket Public School engaged in a host of learning experiences centred on NAIDOC Week, which officially took place during the second week of the holidays.

On Thursday we were lucky enough to be visited by The Deadly Dancers who engaged the entire school with learning experiences delivered through music and dance! Here are a few photos from the day. Make sure you check out the album here for more.

The day concluded with a rotation of learning activities for all stages including; Weapon and instrument painting, Language learning & games! A number of Deadly Dancers even stuck around to get involved in the group activities and have a game of cricket with our Pocket Kids, which was greatly appreciated.

To Dhinawan and the Deadly Dancers, Shannon of the Tweed Heads Lands Council, Jenna from Brunswick Heads Public School, Scottie from Mullumbimby High School and everyone else who came along to make the day so special. The entire Pocket School learning community would like to say thank you, we are so lucky to be part of such an awesome community.

ANZAC Day - 2015.

A lot of Pocket Public School students got up very early on ANZAC Day, braving the cold to take part in the dawn service at Brunswick Heads.

We joined in with the Ocean Shores choir when they performed their moving version of 'Lest We Forget', it was awesome to be able to join in with one of our neighbouring schools!

We also marched with the parade & placed our crosses along with both Brunswick Heads & Ocean Shores Public Schools.

What a great day for The Pocket!

We just about sold out of cakes! The Pocket marbles teams dominated right to the grand finals where we were knocked out by a very strong Brunswick Heads team. Next year we'll get them! Well done everyone! Thank you for coming along and getting involved, you're what makes this school so awesome!

Week 7 Already?

Week 7 is upon us, and almost gone already! We have been busy busy busy! ! ! As you can see, years 2 right through to 6 have been working on their debating topics in preparation for our debating gala day next week.

Meanwhile, K / 1 / 2 & 3 have been rehearsing for the Lighthouse Valley Community of Schools valley fest. Which is taking place early next term.

All of that on top of our athletics, soccer & marbles training!

Students, remember to dress in your house colours for athletics tomorrow (Thursday the 4th of June). Don't worry if you don't have suitable clothing. You can just wear your uniform if you like, and a year 6 student will help you with some face paint in the morning!

The Brunswick Valley VIEW Club has once again been looking after us here at The Pocket Public School. In term one they provided every single student with a hand made library bag. Now we have received a beautiful hand made rug for our students to snuggle up in when they are not feeling well. Thank you so much VIEW club! What a wonderful gift.

Marbles Training Has Commenced!

TPPS students once again have their sights set on the National Marbles Championships, whch will be held at the Old and Gold Festival in Brunswick Heads again this year! We have begun practicing in our amazing playground. All the other schools in this beautiful region had better be on the ball, because we will once again be bringing our A game!!!

Regional Swimming

During week six, five Pocket School students attended regional swimming at Lismore!

Our relay team beat their personal best by a whopping 10 seconds, and Hanna has qualified for state in both freestyle AND backstroke - WOW ! ! !

Congratulations to all students who took part in the VOSS swimming carnival this year, and well done to everyone who advanced on to zone, regional and state! You are all champions!

Clean Up Australia Day - 2015

Last Friday saw a whole school effort to clean up our part of Australia.

Great Schools 'Show-off' Winners!

A new event in 2011, the Great Schools 'Show-off' gives NSW public schools the opportunity to tell their school story, to let everyone know of the outstanding work being done in their school.

Students, working under the guidance of parents and teachers, were asked to develop promotional material for their school and submit this, along with a communications/promotions plan supporting statement telling how the materials was used.

The Pocket Public School was announced the Winner on Wednesday, 3 August in an award ceremony in Sydney celebrating Education Week.

Congratulations to all those involved. It was an outstanding effort by NSW Schools showcasing how good our schools really are!
